/24-7PressRelease/ - May 02, 2007 - Millions of men and women each year enjoy the benefits of a good BOTOX injection - 3.8 million did it in 2005*. BOTOX is practically a household word these days and has become a status symbol among many men and women. Despite its popularity, there are still some myths out there about what BOTOX actually is and what it can do for facial wrinkles.
BOTOX is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium and has been used in the medical field for more than twenty years to treat certain muscle disorders. In 2002, the FDA approved BOTOX for the treatment of cosmetic frown lines between the eyes and around the face. It is the first and only neurotoxin approved for such use in the United States.
Not only is BOTOX effective for frown lines, it can also minimize wrinkles around the eyes (crow's feet), brow lines on the forehead, as well as laugh lines around the mouth. BOTOX works by blocking messages from the brain to the contracting muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. This allows the muscles to relax and the wrinkles they cause to all but disappear. BOTOX can also be used to treat excess sweating of the underarms, palms, and feet using the same principle of blocking messages to the glands. BOTOX is a wonderful solution for wrinkles caused by the action of a muscle, but it cannot treat wrinkles caused by general aging or sun damage.
BOTOX also is not a permanent fix. For most people, the initial treatment lasts about three to four months. With repeated and regular injections, the treatments start to last longer, maybe up to six months. Depending on the area treated, the average cost of BOTOX is around $350. The costs increase if more than one area is being treated.
According to Dr. Alexander Rivkin of the Westside Medical Spa in Los Angeles, "BOTOX has revolutionized the world of cosmetic enhancement. It was the first effective non-surgical treatment for wrinkles and is accessible to almost everyone because of its relatively low cost. BOTOX Cosmetic has paved the way for the development of many other non-surgical cosmetic treatments."
