A widely regarded surgical oncologist, molecular biologist, educator, entrepreneur, and humanitarian, Dr. Lewis has served as an attending surgeon and physician with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and as a biotechnology entrepreneur. He began a career in medicine upon receiving a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Witwatersrand University in 1982. In 1990 at Yale University he completed a PhD. Dr. Lewis served in the role of chief resident of surgery for two years before joining the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as a fellow of the department of surgery in 1992.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Lewis has contributed to numerous professional journals, book chapters and written books pertaining to his areas of expertise. He has accomplished research in the areas of oncogenes, growth factors, signal transduction, immunotherapy, gene therapy and cancer drug development. In recognition of these achievements, Dr. Lewis has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the World. He has received numerous prestigious awards throughout the course of his career, including the Brennan Award from KACR, Hope and Vision Award from the Sarcoma Foundation, Outstanding Teacher Award from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer, ASCO Young Investigator Award, and the AACR Fellowship Award.
In addition to an impressive medical career, Dr. Lewis is a dedicated researcher and entrepreneur. He has served as the CEO and chairman of Molecular Ninja since 2015. He also serves as CEO and Chairman of Samus Theraputics. Previously, he served Antigenics Inc. as its chief medical officer between 2000 and 2003, and CEO of Ziopharm from 2004 through 2015. Dr. Lewis has served as a board member for the Combat Wound Initiative Program, the Sarcoma Foundation of America, as well as a member of the board, and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council and Board of Trustees for The Hope Funds for Cancer Research.
Dr. Lewis is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal Society of Medicine. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, American Society of Hematology, Society of Surgical Oncology, Association of Academy Surgeons, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research and American Society for Cell Biology.
