Jose Chatkin Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Chatkin is a pulmonologist and educator, specializing in tobacco cessation, tobacco-related diseases, and epidemiology of respiratory diseases, as well as exhaled nitric oxide as a marker of inflammation. He has made immense contributions to the field of medicine through his research, publications, and role as an educator.

Born on June 27, 1948, in Pelotas, Brazil, to Jaime and Flora Chatkin, Dr. Chatkin began his career working at Hospital Sao Lucas da PUCRS in 1976. In 2000, he attained the position of full professor of internal medicine and pulmonology at the School of Medicine of Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). To this day, he continues to serve in this position.
Dr. Chatkin graduated with a MD from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1973. Dr. Chatkin had a medical residency between 1974 and 1975, and he received an MSc in pulmonary diseases in 1980 as well as a PhD in Medicine from the same university in 1994. He completed his postdoctoral work at the University of Toronto after studying at the Laboratory of Pulmonary Function of the Toronto General Hospital from 1997 to 1998 under the tutelage of Dr. Noe Ramee.

Dr. Chatkin has been the representative of PUCRS Internal Medicine Department on the Board of the Postgraduate Program in Medicine and Health Sciences since 2015. He also has been the head of the pulmonology section at the university since 2000. From 1997 through 2010, he was the general coordinator of the Medical Residence Committee, and currently serves as a research adviser for the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development.

Furthermore, Dr. Chatkin is a member of PUCRS Examination Boards for positions as Full Professors and to obtain the qualifications of Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science. Dr. Chatkin was the deputy coordinator of the PUCRS Department of Internal Medicine from 2015 through 2016.

From 1986 through 2009, Dr. Chatkin was a WHO and PAHO consultant for various national programs for the control of acute respiratory infections in twelve Latin American countries and four African Portuguese-speaking countries. During this period, he also was the consultant for the Ministry of Health of Brazil between 1988 and 2000. He was the coordinator of program for the control of acute respiratory infections at the Public Health Office of Rio Grande Sul from 1988 to 2000, as well as the Brazilian Representative at the Ibero-Latin American Tobacco Control Working Group since 2014.

Dr. Chatkin was the president of the Society of Pulmonology of Rio Grande do Sul from 2003 to 2004, as well as President of the Rio Grande do Sul Congress of Pulmonology in 2004 and President of the 37th Brazilian Congress of Pulmonology of the Brazilian Thoracic Society (BTS) in 2014. Dr. Chatkin was the scientific secretary of the Brazilian Congress of Pulmonology in 2002. Dr. Chatkin was a coordinator for BTS Epidemiology Section from 2011 to 2012. He also was the general coordinator of the post-graduate course in pulmonology of the Brazilian Thoracic Society between 2015 and 2016, where he has been a member of the Committee for Tobacco Control since 2005, as well as a member of the current Board of Directors. He is also a president-elect of the Brazilian Thoracic Society for 2019 to 2020.

Dr. Chatkin has authored 102 medical papers, 58 of these in international journals and 44 in Brazilian journals. He also was the editor-in-chief of 7 medical books and author of 23 chapters of various books about respiratory diseases. Dr. Chatkin has held 234 lectures at both national and international conferences. He is the recipient of 14 national prizes and 8 internal prizes for his scientific research.

Dr. Chatkin has appeared in various Marquis Who's Who publications, including the 25th and 26th editions of Who's Who in the World. On June 14, 1975, he married Vania Chatkin. The couple has two children, Gustavo Chatkin and Raquel Chatkin, as well as two grandchildren.
