A chief technical officer, board member, and research director for NeoEnBiz Company with the Institute of Environment Safety and Protection, Dr. Lee has been involved in the production, research and development of marine biology and the environmental risk assessment field since 2002. Over the past 15 years, he has focused on metal geochemistry and bioavailability in aquatic environments, as well as the development of ecotoxicity testing protocols, marine environmental risk assessment techniques, and carbon capture and storage research. Meanwhile, his main research contents of marine biology have included the screening of useful organisms, including microalgae, invertebrates, and fish, the establishment of culture conditions, mass production, the evaluation of functionality and safety, and the standardization of useful material production. Since 2010, Dr. Lee began solely focusing on the development of useful aquatic species, biomaterials, and new products by integrating the basic field, the application field, and the scientific field.

Establishing NeoEnBiz, which stands for "New Environmental Business" alongside several of Dr. Lee's colleagues, the company is the only private institute in the Republic of Korea that enables them to use biological and ecotoxicological techniques in the assessment of environmental quality of that time. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Lee has worked to develop many ecotoxicological and risk assessment techniques for legal regulation and monitoring in the Republic of Korea. He has participated in more than 100 research projects, which were mostly funded by the government, and has been a project leader of 20 research and development projects related to environmental and biological subjects.

Between 2000 and today, Dr. Lee has published more than 50 domestic and 20 international scientific articles in both English and his native language. Publications can be found in various journals, including the Ocean Science Journal, Environmental Science and Technology, and Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. He also holds several domestic and foreign patents in his field as a result of his research.

Serving as a board member for the Marine Biological Risk Assessment Commission as part of the Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries, Dr. Lee is also affiliated as a member of the special staff of evaluation committee of the Korea Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology. He remains active as a longtime member of The Korean Society of Oceanography, The Korean Society of Marine Environment and Energy, The Korean Society of Environmental Health and Toxicology, and several others.

Dr. Lee earned a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography at Seoul National University in 1996. Soon after, he was taken onboard as a visiting scientist with USGS, from 1997 to 1998, before concentrating solely on his PhD in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Seoul National University, which he completed in 2002.
