Kelly F. Austin, PhD, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Dedication to Social Science

Dr. Austin is an award-winning leader in social sciences and an associate professor with the department of sociology and anthropology with Lehigh University



She was selected to receive a 2017 CAS Service Award recently in recognition of "exceptional service achievements within the past three years in the social sciences."

    BETHLEHEM, PA, September 22, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kelly F. Austin, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Austin has achieved incredible accolades from the social science community in the 11 years since she first graduated from Oregon State University, contributing research into everything from infectious diseases in underdeveloped nations to the role of beef export and deforestation on society. Since becoming an associate professor with Lehigh University within five years, she has earned further honors as a remarkable young educator and with memberships with numerous sociological associations. Dr. Austin was recognized this year by Lehigh University with a 2017 Williams Research Prize, awarded to continue her work in global development, inequality, global health, the environment, and communities in both rural and urban settings.

As a student at Oregon State, Dr. Austin earned a BA in Sociology simultaneously with a BS in Human Development and Family Science in 2006. From the beginning, she was recognized as a rising star in sociology and anthropology, and as a Master's degree student at North Carolina State University, she wrote her thesis, "The Hamburger Connection," on the relationship of beef exports and deforestation in underdeveloped countries. Her thesis expounded on the ecological inequality that occurs when industrially deficient countries sacrifice their environment as a way to protect their citizens from economic harm.

While studying for a doctorate at North Carolina State, Dr. Austin was awarded the 2010 Terence Hopkins Article Award for her study of soybean exports published in Sociological Quarterly. Dr. Austin earned a PhD in 2012, and her dissertation focused on HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria in underdeveloped nations, which are resurfacing in part due to deforestation concerns.

Dr. Austin served as a researcher and instructor for North Carolina State through her doctoral studies, and began aas an assistant professor at Lehigh in 2012. In 2014, she was accepted as director of the health, medicine and society program with Lehigh University, where she serves today. She progressed through the university to become an associate professor with the department of sociology and anthropology in 2017, and continued to produce celebrated articles for the social sciences. Dr. Austin is a member of the American Sociological Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, the Eastern Sociological Society, the International Sociological Society, and the Scholar Strategy Network.

For her dedication to studying the challenges of human society, Dr. Austin was honored with a First Year Inquiry Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching by North Carolina State University from 2011 to 2012, as well as a Frank Hook Assistant Professorship from Lehigh University for fostering personal interaction and mentoring with students between 2015 and 2017. She was selected to receive a 2017 CAS Service Award recently in recognition of "exceptional service achievements within the past three years in the social sciences."
