Dr. Sato is a leading research physician of hepatology currently serving as an associate professor at Gunma University, located only one hour north from Tokyo. His research has produced an improved understanding of conditions such as fatty liver, hepatocellular carcinoma, and dyslipidemia, with a particular emphasis on hepatitis and steatohepatitis. Dr. Sato has received numerous grants for his research, and since 2011, he has been supported by the Japanese Foundation for Research and Promotion Endoscopy in his development of a number of drugs to combat Hepatitis C, perform basic research associated with steatohepatitis, and clinical research associated with endoscopic technique.

Born to Seiichi and Kinuko Sato, Dr. Sato received a medical doctorate from Jichi Medical University in Japan and earned a PhD from Gunma University. He became a physician with the university and affiliated hospitals through the '90s, practicing medicine in the mountainous prefecture of Gunma famous for its position as a nearby hot spring destination for the Tokyo metropolis. In 1998, Dr. Sato became senior resident with the university and accepted a role as an assistant professor in 2004. He has served as an associate professor since 2013. From 2000 to 2003, Dr. Sato visited as a researcher with Hitachi Chemical Research Center/the University of California, Irvine.

Japan is densely populated, creating an unusually advantageous situation for the spread of Hepatitis C, genotype 1, accounting for about 70 percent of all hepatitis patients in Japan according to a 2015 article from Japan Times. Dr. Sato led the development of Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir for Hepatitis C genotype 1b and 2 patients, as well as Daclatasvir and Asunaprevir for dialysis patients infected with Hepatitis C. Utilizing grants from the Japan Society for Promotion of Science in the 2000s, he has developed research into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, including the status of liver tumors in such patients, the identification of Werner syndrome as a possible cause of the condition, and the long-term effects of the condition on female patients. In addition, Dr. Sato has researched hepatic fibrosis, thrombocytopenia in chronic hepatitis C patients, as well as the reduction of viral load in chronic hepatitis patients.

Dr. Sato has made great strides in hepatology by publishing his research in numerous professional journals, and is the author of "Trends in Bone Cancer Research" as well as "Focus on Vitamin E Research" in 2006. He is a fellow of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society, the Japan Society of Hepatology, the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology, the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, and the Japanese Gastroenterological Association. For accomplishments in the field of liver health, Dr. Sato was selected for inclusion in eight volumes of Who's Who in the World, three volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and two volumes of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare from 2009 to 2012. In 1995, Dr. Sato married Tomomi Sekiguchi, and they have two children, Yuuki and Naoki.
