Prior to his retirement, he served as a professor with the English department at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. He has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.

A respected voice in the field of education, Dr. Davis is credited as the author or co-author of a variety of industry publications, including "The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course in Business Writing and Communication, Second Edition," "Writing: Process, Product, and Power," "Business Communication for the Information Age" and "Rehearsing the Audience." In addition, Dr. Davis is a recognized fellow and past president of The Masonic Society and member of the Kentucky Colonels and Freemasons.

Prior to pursuing a career in education, Dr. Davis was heavily influenced by his grandfather, who worked as a professor. Dr. Davis went on to attend Drake University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. While pursuing formal education, he met Dr. Curtis Page, who advised Dr. Davis to become an English professor. Dr. Davis rose to the rank of sergeant within the U.S. Army. He completed a Master of Arts through Columbia University in 1968, and Ph.D. through the University of Michigan in 1975.

Early in his career, Dr. Davis served the University of Kentucky as an assistant and associate professor of English. He held this position until 1988, when he joined Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, where he eventually held the role of professor prior to his retirement. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Davis briefly served as education director with The American Cabaret Theatre between 2001 and 2005. He was also recognized as a department chair with Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis from 1998 to 2001.
