A neurosurgeon with subspecialty training in minimally invasive endovascular neurosurgery who also specializes in gamma knife radiosurgery and complex brain and spine operations, Dr. Bekelis is the current chairman of neuro-interventional services at Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHSLI). He concurrently serves as director of the Stroke and Brain Aneurysm Center of Excellence at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center (GSHMC), as well as co-director of the neuro intensive care unit at GSHMC. He is also an assistant professor at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and director of the Population Health Research Institute of New York at CHSLI.
Completing an MD at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, summa cum laude, in 2008, Dr. Bekelis would continue his education with a postdoctoral fellowship in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in 2009, a residency in neurosurgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in 2006, and fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery and neurovascular critical care at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 2017. Dr. Bekelis has since spent time on various committees, including the prestigious AANS/CNS Washington Committee, beginning in 2012, and has participated with a number of organizations, including the Suffolk County Medical Society, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurosurgical Surgeons, the American Heart/Stroke Association, and the American Medical Association. Prior to completing his medical degree, he spent time as a research assistant at the University of Athens Medical School, as a research associate at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and as a volunteer researcher at Harvard Medical School.
As a researcher, Dr. Bekelis has led several projects focusing on outcome predictive modeling, comparative effectiveness, resource utilization, regional disparities, diffusion of innovation, intensity of care, workforce allocation, medico-legal issues, and cost. Since 2008, he has authored more than 100 articles in professional journals documenting his research, including JAMA IM, The BMJ, Stroke, and Circulation. He has also contributed chapters to 11 books between 2010 and 2017.
The recipient of close to 20 awards, fellowships, and scholarships, Dr. Bekelis has received the 2016-2017 CNS Foundation Innovative Fellowship Award, a 2015 Robert Florin Award, and the Stroke Care in Emergency Medicine Award. Dr. Bekelis has also been highlighted in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
