Camping out at big-box retailers has been a custom for many Americans the day after Thanksgiving. In recent years however, Black Friday sales have been creeping towards Black Thursday. In 2011 Retailers such as Best Buy, Target , and Kohls held Black Friday sales at midnight, or in some cases, late Thanksgiving night. The earlier Black Friday sales may have led to many potential bargain campers moving their campsites to a computer.
According to comScore, Black Friday in 2011 saw $816 million in online sales, which represented a 26% increase in spending compared to Black Friday 2010. Even with brick-and-mortar retailers opening their doors earlier to compete with online retailers, online shopping is stronger than ever. In 2011, Cyber Monday exceeded $1 billion in online spending making it the heaviest online spending day ever. King Ice expects 2012 to be another record setting year.
