Kiyohiko Kawauchi, PhD Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Kawauchi is a notable special education teacher in the Tokyo area, currently holding the respected position of emeritus professor at the University of Tsukuba. He still teaches part-time for the university in a number of subjects, and is especially celebrated for his skill as an expert with disabled students. Since 2015, Dr. Kawauchi has served as Braille advisor for the Committee on Special Examination Arrangements for the Disabled Applicant at the National Center for University Entrance Examinations in Japan.

A Tokyo native, Dr. Kawauchi was born to Seikichi and Keiko Kawauchi and studied at the Tokyo University of Education, the present day University of Tsukuba, which has led the field with the oldest history of special education in Japan. He earned a Master's degree in 1976 and was certified as a teacher of blind children, going on to work with marriage counseling for the Tokyo Metropolitan Rehabilitation Center for the Physically and Mentally Handicapped. In total, Dr. Kawauchi dedicated 17 years to the center. In 1990, he received a PhD from the University of Tsukuba. He became chief marriage co unselor from 1991 to 1993, concurrently going on to lecture part time at the University of Tsukuba.

From 1993 to 2004, Dr. Kawauchi became a full associate professor with the Universit y of Tsukuba. From 1998 to 2002, he first began assisting the National Center for University Entrance Examinations. He became a full professor with the University of Tsukuba in 2004, serving the institution until 2012. During this period, he served as chief of the master's program in educating persons with disabilities, as well as chair of the doctoral program in Mental and Physical Handicaps. From 2008 to 2010, he chaired the Institute of Disability Sciences in the university. From 2010 to 2012, Dr. Kawauchi served as dean for the Acupuncture and Physical Therapy Teacher Training School at the University of Tsukuba, and served as director of the Special Needs Education Research Center. He accepted the distinguished role of emeritus professor in 2013, and went on as a specially appointed professor until 2015, when he transitioned into a part time role.

In addition to teaching generations of students of varying abilities, Dr. Kawauchi has published his insights in the 1990 book, "Attitudes of Students and Teachers toward Persons with Visual Impairments." His contributions were acknowledged with a 2013 Kataoka Yoshiki Award from the Nagoya Lighthouse Social Welfare Corporation. Dr. Kawauchi has maintained a network of professional relationships with the Japanese Association of Educational Psychology, and has supported the Japanese Association of Special Education, the Association of Disability Sciences, and the Japan Academy for Comprehensive Rehabilitation.

For his accomplishments in the field of special education, he was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and two volumes of Who's Who in Asia in 2007 and 2012. Furthermore, Dr. Kawauchi enjoys travel and music, and is the father of Saki.
