PASADENA, CA, June 24, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Imagine if Johnny Cash, Bob Marley and Joan of Arc were one woman. Now, imagine that woman gathering a band of eclectic musicians and actors on a crusade to expand the bounds of music and experimental theater.
Los Angeles-based Juli Crockett, a retired undefeated pro boxer, country singer and playwright, is heading to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer with an invitation to direct and perform her play, "The Dawn of Quixote: Chapter the First," and may well be the first female pro fighter to land a berth at the prestigious theatrical showcase.
The Alabama-born multimedia artist has made her mark in L.A. music circles as leader/songwriter of the alternative country band, The Evangenitals, as a director of experimental theater at such venues as the Frank Gehry-designed REDCAT and for her musical impersonations of the late country star June Carter Cash in the world's premier Johnny Cash tribute band Cash'd Out. Although her boxing career ended in injury four years ago after a series of televised bouts, she attracted attention from the sports press as the model for the title character in Clint Eastwood's Oscar-winning movie, "Million Dollar Baby" written by her cut-man Jerry Boyd (aka FX Toole).
For the Edinburgh expedition, Crockett has assembled a cast of nine actors and musicians -- including the members of her band -- to accompany her to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where her play will be featured for 14 daytime performances, August 8-22, at "Venue 13" - a showcase venue for California Institute of the Arts, where Crockett received her MFA in Directing. Juli and the band will also be performing as The Evangenitals on club stages in Edinburgh (Voodoo Lounge, Bongo Club) and London (The Sheep Walk) in the evenings and are currently booking additional shows during their stay.
The Dawn of Quixote is a philosophical & musical riff on the first chapter of Don Quixote, largely inspired by Spanish philosopher Unamuo y Jugo's epic "Our Lord Don Quixote" - a passionate text that inspired Crockett to pursue her PhD in Philosophy at the European Graduate School. The play features Los Angeles actors Shaughn Buchholz (Scrubs) as Quixote, Christopher Goodson (Cold Case) as Sancho, and opera singer Lisa Dee (Killsonic, Evangenitals) as Dulcinea.
Described as "cosmic square dance" and "hillbilly jazz", Juli Crockett and The Evangenitals are opening people's minds and ears to a new style of Southern music. Though based in the roots of Country, the band incorporates a wide variety of sophisticated influences, instrumentation and styles. The result is a genre-hopping bull ride that has music fans and critics buzzing in Los Angeles.
The group will present one showing of the play in the LA area before sallying forth to Scotland at the historic Castle Green in Old Town Pasadena. This fundraising event will help the cast and musicians to raise money for their travel expenses, room, and board. Gates to the Castle Green grounds open at 3:30. There will be an art show, silent auction, craft fair, face painting and balloon twisting for kids, music, sangria, and more to entertain the crowd till the play begins at 5pm.
