/24-7PressRelease/ -- Landover, Maryland, Man Sentenced to Nine Years for Federal Sex Crimes
Andrew Ramos pled guilty in August 2011 to federal sex crimes, including crossing state lines for illicit sexual conduct, possession of child pornography and enticement of a minor. In December, U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer sentenced Ramos to nine years imprisonment, followed by 10 years supervised release and registration as a sex offender.
Ramos' sex-crimeconviction is a direct result of an investigation instigated jointly by the FBI's Child Exploitation Task Force, which includes the Metropolitan Police Department (District of Columbia), and the U.S. Department of Justice's Project Safe Childhood. Established in 2006, PSC is an umbrella program aimed at reducing child sexual exploitation nationally. Federal prosecutions have increased significantly since the program's launch.
In Ramos' case, important evidence reportedly came from online planning by Ramos with an FBI undercover agent to meet for sexual contact with an 11-year-old female child. In March 2011, Ramos traveled from his home in Landover, Maryland, to a pre-arranged meeting place in the District of Columbia, where he was arrested. Subsequently, child pornography was found in Ramos' home.
A sex-crime investigation or charge can permanently tarnish your reputation in the community, and a conviction has even more serious consequences, including the possibility of hard prison time and registration as a sex offender. Illegal sex acts can constitute either (or both) state and federal crimes and anyone accused needs to mount a vigorous criminal defense.
If you are under suspicion or investigation for a sex offense, or have been charged, it is imperative that you retain an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible to prepare your defense and uphold your legal and constitutional rights. If the alleged crime is one under federal law, be sure to contact a lawyer with federal court experience.
