Las Vegas Orthodontics Specialist Introduces TAD Devices

Dr. David Alpan, a Las Vegas NV orthodontist, explains how TADs work and how they are used.

LAS VEGAS, NV, August 17, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs) are basically mini-screws that attach directly to the bone of the jaw and allow for specific orthodontic and dental procedures. "TADs are very useful in a variety of situations where they can simplify treatment and reduce treatment time," says Dr. David Alpan, a Las Vegas orthodontics practitioner.

TADs can be used to address a number of dental conditions. For instance, if a dentist wants to pull in your front teeth, he or she could use your back molar teeth to anchor the screws and exert pressure to pull the front teeth in. Molars are large, multi-rooted, and will move very little.

Dentists can also use the screws to move teeth in order to close a gap caused by a missing tooth, correct an anterior open bite, or to upright tipped molars. "TADs can prevent the need for dental implants and jaw surgery," points out Las Vegas braces provider, Dr. Alpan. "So it can be a less invasive solution for some issues."

TADs can also be used in conjunction with braces to eliminate the need for headgear and thus reducing the need for the patient's compliance with treatment. "Patients appreciate the TAD system," says Dr. Alpan, a Las Vegas orthodontist. "It can reduce the total braces treatment time and increase the patient's comfort."

TADs can be inserted directly into the bone in a simple surgical procedure. Made of titanium, the screws are about the length of a thumbnail and as wide as the head of a pin. The dentist will first numb the area with an anesthetic gel. When the TAD is inserted, the patient may feel some pressure, but rarely discomfort. "When treatment is finished, the TAD can be removed quickly and painlessly," observes Dr. Alpan, a Las Vegas invisalign provider.
