While the use of lasers as part of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is not new, the Saturn Laser from Research Instruments in the United Kingdom recently received the approval of the federal government for use here.
What sets it apart from other lasers is that when it is used, all guesswork as to the correct position of the laser beam is eliminated through use of a "pilot" laser that guides the main laser. This accuracy helps greatly to ensure the safety of the egg.
Laser ablation is the partial removal of the zona pellucida, the strong outer membrane that forms around an egg and which must be penetrated by the sperm for successful fertilization. To increase IVF success, the zona is penetrated using a laser which facilitates implantation.
Dr. Littman says, "I understand how difficult it is to want a child and the effort that goes into repeated IVF procedures. We use the Saturn Laser to provide the optimal chance of success."

The air in the Red Rock Fertility Center is subject to a filtration system that renders it extremely sterile. A series of UV lamps will kill bacterium and viruses. There are special phones that automatically notify Red Rock Fertility Center staff if there is a power outage that might endanger the eggs being stored. The paint does not release any volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere.
