Bachata is a Latin genre of music from the Dominican Republic. It has elements of other Latin music genres and styles, of which Bolero is the strongest influence. The first Bachata artists emerged from the rural areas of the Dominican Republic in the 1950's. The Bachata dance evolved from this type of music. Bachata songs are often about country living and love, both passionate romance and hurtful heartbreaks.

The Grand Expo Hall, inside the Silver Legacy Resort Casino, is the site of the Reno Winter Bachata Festival, January 2-6, 2013. The Latin DanceFest uses close to 30,000 square feet of ballroom space and has over 10,000 square feet of dance floor.
