Launch of New Book to Fund Music School

Students to discover and develop new talents

PROVIDENCE, RI, November 16, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Students who desire to use their musical talent to enhance their school work will have the opportunity to do so at a new music school opening in Rhode Island. Local music teacher, Gail Cavanaugh is writing a book, Beyond My Imagination, based on her experiences in teaching at a local after school program. She has launched a startup fundraising campaign on-line to raise money to publish the book. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to finance the school.

Many schools today are preparing children to score better on standardized tests because of the No Child Left Behind law which requires standardized testing. However, many educators and parents oppose the No Child Left Behind law in their Parents Public School Report because over-emphasis on standardized testing has "caused considerable collateral damage in too many schools, including narrowing the curriculum, teaching to the test, reducing love of learning, pushing students out of school, driving excellent teachers out of the profession and undermining school climate."

Music education programs can enhance a child's education. Christopher Johnson of the University of Kansas "revealed that students in elementary schools with superior music education programs scored around 22 percent higher in English and 20 percent higher in math scores on standardized tests, compared to schools with low-quality music programs regardless of socioeconomic disparities....."

Rhode Island Kids Create Music School offers piano instruction to children and adults, aged six and up. The plan is to expand the school so that students can use more of their talents, such as art, drama, and singing, as well as to learn to play other musical instruments. In this way, students who do not have access to superior music education programs can reap the benefits at this school. Gail Cavanaugh has been teaching piano for the last ten years and has sung on a praise and worship team at church.
