Lawrence J. Singerman, MD, FACS, FICS, Inducted into Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Ophthalmology

    BEACHWOOD, OH, January 28, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lawrence J. Singerman, Founder of Retina Associates of Cleveland, Inc., has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in ophthalmology.

Dr. Singerman always wanted to learn about laser surgery and the diabetic retinopathy industry, leading him to form Retina Associates of Cleveland in 1974. Proficient in retinal, vascular and macular diseases and surgery, he tends to his patients, diagnosing retinal problems and macular degeneration, and performs eye examinations. He has more than four decades' worth of experience and has two professorships with the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami and Case Western Reserve University. At the latter, he is also a clinical professor of ophthalmology.

Dr. Singerman participated as a principal investigator in 75 clinical trials on diabetic retinopathy and continues his leadership at the Macular Society. He is the principal investigator in studies on age-related macular degeneration, which have led to new drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He was involved in the original diabetic retinopathy study sanctioned by the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Singerman founded the Macula Society in 1977 and has been its executive secretary from then until the present. It is a forum for new research in retinal vascular and macular diseases. Membership is by application, with acceptance criteria including extensive contribution to retinal literature. The Macula Society recognizes outstanding achievement by its members and others through awards and lectures, and holds an annual meeting open to members, their guests co-authors, and sponsor representatives.

The former president of the Ohio Ophthalmological Society, the Cleveland Ophthalmologic Society, and the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland, Dr. Singerman has served as the vice chairman of the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Case Western Reserve University and a master's degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. A Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and the The Royal Society of Medicine, he completed a residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center and a fellowship in retinal surgery at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Singerman has received several Lifetime Achievement Awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland. In the coming years, he hopes to experience professional growth, expand his organization, recruit more doctors, and enhance his current relationships.
