The .ME county code was assigned to Montenegro after it gained its independence in June 2006. But, due to the potential of the worldwide wide appeal the .ME would have, the government of Montenegro decided .ME would be operated as a generic name space.
The launch of the .EU domain back in April 2006 was so popular, with reports noting that nearly 2.6 million registrations were made in the first year alone. LCN managing director Mark Boost commented "due to the appeal that the .ME has for personal use on blogs and family websites with customers having the opportunity to register their full & surname, and, companies that wish to personalise their brands and product, the catchy .ME extension has the potential to significantly outsell the .EU domain".
The explosion in popularity of personal and company blogs over recent years has seen over 112.8 million blogs indexed by Technorati (the search engine for blogs) in June 2008. With the opportunity to register domains such as joebloggs.me and joebloggscompany.me the potential for both individuals and companies alike is huge.
Registration is available to the general public from 4pm GMT Thursday 17th July. Keep in mind that if you want to date.me, marry.me, or leave.me, just don't leave it too late till you register.me
