With 40 years of professional experience in chemical engineering, Dr. Fan has served as a Distinguished University Professor and C. John Easton Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering with the Ohio State University since 1996, and was department chair from 1994 to 2003. His areas of expertise include fluidization, multiphase flow, particulate reaction engineering, and particle technology. His research has led to advances in the chemical, petrochemical, mineral, and material industries, and his work has been instrumental in developing carbon capture technology for coal combustion.
Dr. Fan began his career as a student at National Taiwan University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1970. He relocated to the United States to study at West Virginia University, earning a Master of Science in chemical engineering in 1973, and a PhD in chemical engineering in 1975. In 1978, he completed a Master of Science in statistics with Kansas State University.
A respected voice in the field, Dr. Fan has written extensively in his areas of expertise. He is an author and coauthor of five books, nine book chapters, more than 400 journal articles, and seven symposium volumes. He is a member or an academician of the U. S. National Academy of Engineering, the Mexican Academy of Science, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Academia Sinica and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. In addition, he has served as a consultant to 20 major corporations, and was the editor-in-chief of Powder Technology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Fan has been recognized numerous times for his contributions, having won more than 80 awards and honors from universities and professional societies worldwide. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers has given him the Alpha Chi Sigma Award for Chemical Engineering Research, the Particle Technology Forum Fluidized Processing Recognition Award, the Thomas Baron Award in Fluid-Particle System, and the R.H. Wilhelm Award. He won the Malcolm E. Pruitt Award from the Council for Chemical Research, the Chemical Engineering Division Union Carbide Lectureship Award from the American Society for Engineering Education, the E.V. Murphree Award from the American Chemical Society, and he has been recognized as an Institution Eminent Speaker Award from the Australian Institution of Engineers and an Institute Lecturer of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Looking toward the future, Dr. Fan intends to expand upon his expertise.
