NESCONSET, NY, March 13, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Long Island web design company, Benjamin Marc, warns Long Island business owners about hiring the wrong SEO company to increase web site rankings. Many business owners fail to realize that there are companies out there that will use black hat techniques to try and boost your site rankings. In reality, this will cause a site to be automatically banned from the major search engines.

"Be cautious of companies that guarantee top rankings without using the right formula and business plan," according to Benjamin Marc CEO Anthony Savino. "Companies that promise top ranking right away are more than likely using black hat techniques".
Companies that use questionable SEO techniques will use a variety of techniques to boost rankings.

Some companies will go as far as to publish duplicate content on several web pages at a time. Some people forget that search engines penalize websites that contain identical content on several pages on a site.

Since competition has become so fierce in today's economy, some companies will copy content word-for-word from high-ranking web sites and publish it on their own sites.

"If your content has been copied and posted on another site, you can notify all major search engines and inform them that your website content has been plagiarized," Savino suggests.

Another technique business owners should avoid at all costs is keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing also referred to as "keyword spamming" consists of using a keyword phrase too many times on a content page. When keywords are used, they should be relevant to the web site's overall theme and used in moderation.

Some companies will also use is hidden links and texts. This consists of hyper links and content that's hidden from visitors. The goal is for the search engines to pick up and view the links. The links and text is the exact color as the background color of a particular page. Today's search engines are more sophisticated and can immediately spot this trick.

Major search engines uses a four step process to stop people from using black hat techniques to increase site rankings:

*Web page is flagged for review.
*Page ranking is significantly reduced.
*Web page is completely dropped from the engine.
*Web site is banned from the engine.

Business owners can avoid being banned from the engines by hiring a reputable web design firm that offers credible SEO marketing techniques.
