Los Angeles Periodontist, Dr. Sharyar Baradaran, Comments on Possibility of Classifying Gum Disease Based on Genetic Signature

Dr. Sharyar Baradaran shares his opinion on the possibility of classifying gum disease in accordance with its generic signature.

LOS ANGELES, CA, October 26, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Los Angeles periodontist, Dr. Sharyar Baradaran, comments on the possibility of classifying gum disease based on a genetic signature. Periodontal disease is a common dental problem that is estimated to affect about half of people over 35, and the incidence increases with age. Caused by oral bacteria, periodontal disease is an infection that can continue to spread past the gum tissues and into the bones and other structures surrounding and supporting the teeth. Previously, gum disease was classified according to the extent of the symptoms, including the depth of pockets, the amount of attachment loss and the degree of bone loss. Recently, researchers discovered a new way to classify gum disease: genetic signatures.

The research, which was published in the online "Journal of Dental Research," may offer periodontists new ways to differentiate types of periodontal disease at earlier stages and develop more customized treatment plans, according to MedicalXpress.com. Identifying genetic markers related to aggressive gum disease may lead to stopping potentially serious gum disease before it causes permanent damage, such as bone and tooth loss. Patients with aggressive periodontal disease could be treated more aggressively even before the infection has caused damage.

Dr. Baradaran offers extensive treatment options for his patients. "Some seek us out, and some who require advanced care are referred to us by other dentists and physicians. They have gum disease and are at the point of no return. They have to go to the next phase of surgical intervention to arrest the disease process," he said. Available treatments include:

- scaling and root planing
- Antimicrobial therapy
- Bone grafting
- Guided tissue regeneration to combat gum recession
- Periodontal maintenance

Cosmetic gum surgery is also available. These treatments include gum contouring, crown lengthening and other procedures designed to improve the look of the gums or overall smile.
