RALEIGH, NC, February 10, 2012
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Lotus Survival Foundation, a local nonprofit focused on providing education, resources and support to those who have been affected by breast cancer, will be conducting Asi Me Rio (This is how I laugh) Certified Laughter Leader Training laughter yoga workshops this Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11. The workshops, funded by the Fondo Yoplait para la Mujer Hispana (Yoplait fund for the Hispanic Woman) grant from Yoplait, will train 14 individuals to become bilingual laugher yoga instructors, who will in turn be able to reach more Wake, Durham and Orange County breast cancer patients in the Latino community.
"Latino families face disproportionately high rates of breast cancer due to a variety of factors," said Claudia Aguirre, founder of Lotus Survival Foundation. "By training bilingual laughter yoga instructors, we are giving the Latino community access to culturally competent resources to aid them and their families in the healing process of going through breast cancer."
During the course, participants will acquire the basic facilitation skills of how to lead a group of people through simulated Laughter Yoga and Laughter Meditation techniques developed by Dr. Madan Kataria, including skills of converting simulated laughter into real infectious and spontaneous laughter without using jokes, comedy or humor. The practice of laughing yoga was developed in 1995 in response to the various studies prescribing laughter as a viable alternative medicine for wellness, producing great physiological and psychological benefits including alleviated physical pain and an expedited recovery.
Following the two-day training program, the newly-certified bilingual laughter yoga instructors will begin conducting free laughing yoga sessions throughout Wake and Durham counties, which are the counties in North Carolina with the largest Hispanic population (based on the 2012 United States Census Report). Individuals interested in signing up to participate in the future sessions taught by the 14 newly-certified instructors can visit http://www.lotussurvivalfoundation.org to see available dates.
