-- M. Nisa Khan has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Khan received her bachelor's degree in 1986 in physics and mathematics from Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota, and her master's and PhD degrees in electrical engineering, in 1989 and 1992 respectively, from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. From 1984 through 1993, she worked as a research associate at Honeywell Solid State Research Center in Bloomington, Minnesota. After completing her doctorate, she became a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, now Nokia Bell Labs, in Holmdel, New Jersey, and spent most of six years at the Photonics Research Laboratory at Crawford Hill conducting pioneering work on 40-Gb/s optoelectronic and integrated photonic devices. Dr. Khan then worked on optical communication subsystems at several other companies, including her own venture-backed companies in New Jersey.
In 2006, Dr. Khan started an independent research and engineering company in LED lighting and has since been involved in innovation and technology development for making solid-state lighting more suitable for general lighting. As an independent consultant, she performs feasibility studies in various LED lighting and display industries and offers comprehensive platform design, development, and testing solutions for general lighting applications. From 2007 to 2016, she wrote the "LED Update" column for Signs of the Times magazine, which has been serving the electric signage industry since 1906.
Dr. Khan has been engaged in a dual career in finance and engineering since 2002. She is licensed in Series 7, 66, life and health insurance, and worked at American Express as a financial advisor for 4 years. During her second year at American Express, she was selected to be a senior financial advisor and a member of MDRT (Million Dollar Round Table). She has been running IEM Asset Management, a registered investment advisory (RIA) company superintended by FINRA and SEC since 2007, where she actively manages investment portfolios and offers comprehensive financial planning services for numerous clients in the USA. She has also been running IEM LED Lighting Technologies, a R&D and consulting company in optics and lighting, since 2006.
Dr. Khan authored a college textbook, "Understanding LED Illumination" published by CRC Press in 2013. The book is utilized as an academic and research textbook in over 210 well-known universities around the world. While serving as a comprehensive textbook in LED lighting, the book is the first to explain why inorganic LEDs have strong glare and how to resolve this problem with patented optical waveguide solutions. Dr. Khan frequently publishes in peer-reviewed optics and electrical engineering journals on cutting-edge science and technologies involving LED lighting and optoelectronics. Aside from academic and research oriented publishing, she has written articles for Seeking Alpha, a well-known equity investment online site, and various LED lighting trade magazines.
Dr. Khan has written analytic comments on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), finance and energy-efficiency topics now archived with the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. She is a senior member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), holds 10 patents in optics and LED lighting, and has written over 50 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers. Through her dual professions in finance and STEM, she diligently works to generate valuable goods and services as meticulously as possible while honoring social responsibility.
