OAKLAND, CA, June 22, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- The Board, an informal group of prominent black businessmen and professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area, has invited the M3 Math & Sports Academy to showcase its extraordinary results at it next meeting. Since M3 was conceived at a meeting of The Board in spring 2006, the organization has accomplished stellar results with the primarily low-income black boys it works with. "The M3 boys have gone from being "at risk" to become top performers at their schools in terms of academic performance and sports and behavior", said KG Charles-Harris, M3 Foundation?s Executive Director. "Since the idea of starting an organization to address the challenge of getting black boys to perform came to me at The Board, a number of individuals have been very helpful in assisting us to achieve our goals", he continued.
Since its inception, M3 has worked to ensure that black boys are immersed in a positive male environment. This has led to significant goal achievement by the boys as they have significantly improved their academic performance, fitness, behavior and aspirations for the future. M3 boys, often starting with GPAs as low as 0.8, now have an average of GPA of 3.2 across all schools where the M3 Foundation is active. Important in the success has been a strategy to measure everything and execute our strategies according to analysis of available and collected data. "There is no reason education should be haphazard and based on untested assumptions", added Mr. Charles-Harris. "We have chosen to manage M3 like a business, utilizing all available technologies to enhance our execution", he continued.
Steven Wilkinson, a board member of the M3 Foundation and a central coordinator of The Board, has been closely involved with M3 since it?s inception. "The Board is very proud that M3 was born at one of our meetings", he said. "We will continue to do everything in our power to change the situation that commonly face black boys in our society", he continued.
The San Francisco Bay Area has a drop out rate of black males from school of 73 percent. Of these, more than 64 percent end up in the penal system.

About M3 Math & Sports Academy:
M3 Math & Sports Academy alters the trajectory that is common for black males by causing them to perform at a high to excellent level to become future college students and leaders. M3 works with black boys, often from low and middle-income families, to produce tomorrow's leaders. We recognize that it's difficult for black boys to motivate themselves to achieve academically when there are few role models in their communities who have achieved success through higher education.
At M3 our focus is to create habits of success. We emphasize strenuous physical exercise in sports practice with rigorous academics (with a focus on mathematics) and ensure that prominent black men from the community meet and speak with the boys on a regular basis. In addition, we incorporate entertainment arts and analysis of contemporary music and films to create an environment of social awareness and critique. M3 Math & Sports Academy has been in existence in the East Bay since 2006.
