Main steps for a successful offshore outsourcing project
Offshore outsourcing is being done in a dozen countries, but India has emerged as the global model for offshore outsourcing for many reasons. The outsourcing process must be planned wisely.

/24-7PressRelease/ - DUBLIN, IRELAND, February 03, 2007 - Offshore outsourcing, or hiring an external organisation to perform business functions in a different country, is becoming an increasingly popular way of cutting costs and maximising business efficiency.

However, there are many examples of offshore outsourcing projects that have failed and this can put off business owners who are unsure of how to minimise the risks involved.

Some of the problems include language and communication barriers, employee relations and cultural differences, but if managed successfully these problems can be overcome and offshore outsourcing can have an extremely positive impact on the performance of a business, not only by minimising costs but also by improving business communication.

Before starting an offshore outsourcing project business owners should discuss in detail their business objectives and their budget for the project with the manager who will be overseeing the offshore operation. Project processes and long term goals should be discussed in order to ensure that the designated team fully understands what is expected of them.

Of course, the level of understanding between a company and its offshore project team will improve the more they interact with each other, and so business owners should maintain constant contact with their offshore partners throughout the duration of the project.

Planning and budgeting for visits to the offshore facility are also essential as this will allow business owners to get to know their overseas employees personally, boosting morale and improving communication.

Cultural differences can also be an issue. Indeed, attitudes and approaches to work and working relationships can vary greatly from country to country and even region to region. Therefore taking the time to familiarise oneself with certain aspects of the culture in question can help to improve relations and encourage greater respect and understanding.

As well as cultural issues business owners should make sure they are fully clued up on the employment laws of the country to which they are outsourcing their operations. The employment regimes of some common offshore destinations can be somewhat restrictive in terms of leave policies, hiring and dismissal procedures and flexible hours guidelines, so it is essential that business owners make sure they are complying with these laws and that they will not restrict the development of the project.

Of course, however capable the offshore team may appear to be, it is essential that business managers have a back up plan if things go wrong. Anticipating revisions to project timetables and budgets is a sensible way to minimise the damage to the overall business if the offshore project fails to run as planned.
