CARLSBAD, CA, October 08, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pat McFadden, UK's Minister for Business, is a staunch supporter of his country's reigning manufacturing position. He cites numerous examples that fly in the face of the critics, such as the UK being the world's sixth largest manufacturer and how the sector contributes GBP160 billion per year to the economy. But he is also the first time to admit that given the global recession, the time is now to step up efforts to support the sector like never before. As told in Manufacturing Digital magazine, found on ManufacturingDigital.com (www.manufacturingdigital.com), McFadden and his team are taking an activist approach to enhance Britain's capabilities in areas such as advanced manufacturing, low carbon and digital technologies.

On the potential within these fields, McFadden writes, "It is clear to me that the companies best placed to take advantage of those opportunities will be the ones with the right capabilities and the right skills. They will be businesses with the innovation, creativity, confidence and raw talent to do new things." In keeping with the this month's innovation theme, Manufacturing Digital sat down with none other than Dick Olver, the Chairman of defense and aerospace group BAE Systems, a company synonymous with cutting edge technologies and advanced manufacturing. While BAE's latest inventions were quite impressive - from little insects that can film and record what they see in a room to seemingly ordinary paint that can actually record conversations - Manufacturing Digital also explored more weighty issues. Olver speaks candidly about the important role manufacturing plays in the UK economy, how BAE is working on high end security systems to prevent catastrophic events like 9/11 and convincing school children that a career in engineering can actually be really fun.

Other October Highlights:

• A Q&A exclusive with Jack Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric. When asked for one piece of advice for CEOs today, Welch tells Manufacturing Digital, "You have to be sure your company is stable. Therefore, you have to focus on getting cash. That is the number one priority - be sure you have cash, and that you aren't depending on somebody else to finance you." The full Q&A with Welch, who was also named "Manager of the Century" by Fortune magazine in 2000 and is co-author of the weekly column "The Welch Way" in BusinessWeek, can be found directly at: http://www.manufacturingdigital.com/Magazine.aspx?id=1727&page=22
