/24-7PressRelease/ - TORONTO, CANADA, June 20, 2008 - The Honourable Justice George Ferguson has published his memoirs, reflecting on his Toronto upbringing, his years recovering from the devastating effects of polio, his legal career and appointment to the bench of the Superior Court of Justice. In his retirement years he continued to flourish and he never forgot the charity he helped to create, Ontario March of Dimes. Proceeds from the sale of "Who am I to Judge", will benefit the Post-Polio Program established over two decades ago and which is still leading edge today.
Contracting polio at fourteen left Justice Ferguson with permanent physical disabilities, but did not harm his spirit. Ferguson went on to have a lengthy and distinguished career in law, a long and happy marriage and an involvement with March of Dimes that has spanned over 50 years and continues today.
Given the significant accomplishments of Judge Ferguson, March of Dimes established an award in his honour over a decade ago, known as the Judge George Ferguson Award for Full Participation and Equality which recognizes truly distinguished contributions to the lives of people with disabilities, such as the adoption of Human Rights legislation or the creation of barrier free communities.
March of Dimes President and CEO, Andria Spindel says, "The award is bestowed annually to someone whose contribution has moved society forward toward inclusion of people with disabilities. This Award captures the personal qualities and contributions of Justice Ferguson."
Post-polio syndrome (PPS) affects over 50,000 Canadians and it is a historically connected to the roots of March of Dimes which served people affected by polio in the '50s and helped fund research to find a vaccine to prevent it. Today March of Dimes Canada continues to address the issues, both health and social, of persons who live with PPS and its debilitating effects.
Proceeds from the sale of Justice Ferguson's autobiography will be contributed to Polio Canada a program of March of Dimes Canada delivering peer support to polio survivors and health education across Canada.
The 160 page volume, "Who Am I To Judge" is available for purchase from the March of Dimes Web at a cost of $25.00 per book which includes GST and shipping.
March of Dimes Canada is a nationally registered charitable organization providing support services to people with disabilities, their families and caregivers across Canada. Its roots were in the 1900's campaigns to find a "cure" or prevention for poliomyelitis.
