Margaret Janice Murphey Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Murphey is a retired mental health, marriage, and family counselor, now running a nonprofit counseling practice in Oregon. In addition to psychological health, she gave to her community in spiritual matters as a lifelong Sunday school teacher and community leader. Ms. Murphey was recognized for her many years of service with a 1997 School Bell Award and a 1997 Indian Health Service Directors Award for Excellence.

Born to Glen Roosevelt Wurster and Lucile Mildred Lopez, Ms. Murpehy married Russell Warren Murphey in 1959 and raised three children: Lucinda Huff, Rochelle Scott, and Janice Sorenson. She worked as a secretary with Folson State Prison in California through the early '60s and taught with Desert Sands Unified Schoolsin Indio, California through 1972. In the late '70s, Ms. Murphey worked as a claims determiner for the employment development department of Redding, California, and served as a secretary with Shasta County in Redding. She was exposed to the trials and tribulations of families as a welfare worker in Redding, where she served through 1985.

In 1986, Ms. Murphey earned a BA in Social Science, followed by a Master's degree in Psychology in 1989, both from the California State University in Chico. She joined the university counseling center as a therapy intern, and worked in Chico with the Family Service Association as well as the Butte County Drug and Alcohol Abuse Center. In 1990, she accepted a position as mental health counselor with the Cibecue Indian Health Clinic in Arizona. From 1998 to 2006, Ms. Murphey dedicated her tireless efforts as a school counselor for the Cibecue Apache High School and Elementary School, and contributed to her community as a former member of the Arizona School Counselors Association. She has served as a member of the Kinisba Child Abuse Committee from 1994 to 1998.

In the civic sphere, Ms. Murphey has served with the Pacheco School in Redding as well as a Bible teacher in California with the Nazarene Church in Sacramento, Indio, and Redding from 1958 to 1985. She has provided nonprofit counseling since 2006. Additionally, Ms. Murphey has contributed as a member of the American Counseling Association, the American Association of Christian Counselors, the American Academy of Bereavement Facilitators, and formerly of the Arizona School Counselors Association.

Ms. Murphey was selected for inclusion in the 2005 and 2006 volumes of Who's Who Among American Teachers, two volumes of Who's Who in the World, the 1997 to 1998 volume of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and the 1998 to 1999 volume of Who's Who in the West, as well as numerous volumes of Who's Who in America and Who's Who of American Women. Though her husband Russell passed away in 2013, Ms. Murphey finds joy in her five granddaughters and six great granddaughters. She enjoys studying American Indian History, sewing, crafts, travel, and bluegrass music.
