Marie Caroline Alexander, CHRP, Honored by Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Business Management

Alexander, vice president of business development and corporate services for SaskWater, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in business management and human resources.

In her teenage years, Ms. Alexander thought she would eventually work in the field of education. However, she began working as a sales associate for a department store, and although she did not intend to remain in this position, she became interested in learning about the work environment and store operations. She took this time to begin developing herself professionally and gain a greater understanding of what was needed to create an enjoyable workplace. She discovered that the ideal work environment should provide employees with opportunities for recognition and professional development, as well as allow them to laugh and have fun. Ms. Alexander soon realized that human resources was her niche.

Over a span of 38 years involved in business management, she has recognized the importance of various roles and functions within an organization, and she has become proficient in developing relationships at all levels. Receiving recognition for the work she does from union members, peers and senior executives has validated the importance of the human resource function. Ms. Alexander is a certified human resources professional through the Canadian Council of Human Resources Association. She holds an additional certification in adult and continuing education from the University of Victoria.

Ms. Alexander has worked in various sectors within both the private and public sectors, including retail, retail distribution, automotive parts manufacturing, apparel manufacturing, education, policing and provincial utilities. She has held senior positions at SIAST in Saskatoon and the College of New Caledonia in Prince George, B.C. She has also worked as the manager of human resources for the Niagara Regional Police Service. Furthermore, Ms. Alexander has been employed by Zellers, Dylex, Edscha and Bradshaw-Stradwick.

She brings 25 years of human resources and senior management experience to her current position with SaskWater, a company she has been involved in since August 2006. Ms. Alexander served as the manager of human resources until she became the acting vice president of business development and corporate services in March 2010.

At SaskWater, Ms. Alexander oversees various units within the corporation, including human resources, finance and accounting, administrative services, legal services, information technology services, policy and planning, corporate communications and business development. Serving in three major roles, chief financial officer, chief human resources officer and chief administration officer, she works with corporate executives and the board of directors to facilitate various initiatives. She also ensures company alignment

with board, shareholder and government guidelines. Ms. Alexander plans to grow in her current role and eventually move into teaching, so that she may share her experience and knowledge with others.
