Dr. Shapiro is a professor emeritus of physics at California State University (CSU) in Fullerton since 2002. Joining the faculty in 1970, he served in a number of roles, such as acting associate dean of the School Of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, and chairman of the physics department for over 10 years. He was a professor for a total of 32 years. During his tenure, Dr. Shapiro also served as a visiting associate in the department of mathematics, physics, and astronomy at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) from 1976 to 2004, and held a second visiting research appointment at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Prior to entering academia, he spent two years as a research fellow in the Kellogg Radiation Laboratory at Caltech and another two years as a research associate at the Nuclear Structure Research Laboratory at the University of Rochester. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in physics with honors from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Master of Science and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Pennsylvania. He also served as a program officer at the National Science Foundation.
Although trained as a nuclear physicist, much of Dr. Shapiro's work involved atmospheric physics and geophysics. Over the years, his achievements have included research in experimental nuclear physics, experimental nuclear astrophysics, geophysics and atomic collisions in solids. His most notable contributions were in the field of computational condensed matter physics, where he used molecular dynamics techniques to explore the properties of ion and cluster collisions with solid and liquid targets. He also developed a model for calculating the core excitation of electrons alongside colleague T.A. Tombrello, to account for inelastic energy loss in sputtering events. The Shapiro-Tombrello model has been incorporated in the Kalypso molecular dynamics code. Furthermore, Dr. Shapiro is known for the development of one of the first "smart" remote sensing geophysical instruments with Jonathan Melvin from Caltech. The Caltech Radon-Thoron Monitoring devices were remotely located throughout southern California. An on-board microprocessor controlled the operation of the device, which periodically sampled water in deep wells for radon concentrations by measuring radioactive aerosols obtained by pumping air through the well water. Radon and environmental data obtained by the devices were periodically transmitted to a central computer at Caltech over telephone lines for analysis. The recipient of numerous grants for his research from such organizations as the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Science Foundation, Dr. Shapiro's more recent interests have included climate change, since it has become such a vital area of concern for the generations to follow.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shapiro authored and co-authored more than 125 papers in peer reviewed journals in the areas of experimental nuclear physics, experimental nuclear astrophysics, atmospheric physics, solid earth geophysics, computational condensed matter physics and physics education. He also served as webmaster for the CSU Emeriti Association at Fullerton and was the editor and publisher for "The Irascible Professor" in 1999, an online journal of commentary on issues in grades K-12 and higher education, which included articles by Dr. Shapiro as well as guest commentators.
A former elected fellow of the American Physical Society and now senior fellow since retirement, Dr. Shapiro was affiliated with the Materials Research Society, the Council on Undergraduate Research, and now with the CSU Emeritus and the Retired Faculty Association. Notably, he was named Volunteer of the Year by the CSU Emeriti Association and has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as several editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the West.
Born in Boston, Dr. Shapiro married his wife Anita Rae Lavine in 1961 and has three children. Locally, he has been involved with the Fullerton Community Emergency Response Team since 2007. He was also recently appointed as a member of the City of Fullerton energy and resource management committee in 2017, a role that lasts approximately four years. Dr. Shapiro formerly served as a member of the public information and education committee with the California Task Force on Earthquake Preparedness, president of the Pasadena Young Democrats, and served on the board directors of the CSU Fullerton Foundation.
