He served as Director of the Center from 1971 to 1982, then again from 1986 to 1989. He has also been a Senior Research Fellow at the Center for more than 45 years, since 1971. Prior to that, from 1968 to 1971, he was assistant director of the Survey Research Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University Joint Center for Urban Studies. From 1965 to 1968, he served as the assistant director of the Community Research Project of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies in Boston, MA. Dr. Fowler always wanted to pursue a career that made a difference in his community. He found that he had an interest in psychology because he wanted to study and better understand human behavior. At the University of Michigan, he learned that he could apply his interest in psychology to surveys, using the opportunity to measure important things in society. He developed a commitment to finding better ways to do surveys and has published several books and many articles on his research. Through his work with the Foundation, he has made a significant impact on the way patients and doctors make medical decisions through the promotion of the idea that the patient should be routinely informed and involved in decisions regarding their medical care.
