Martin P. Edelstein, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Edelstein has been practicing family medicine in Great Neck for over 35 years. He has a great sense of pride in having taken care of many families for four generations, including several centenarians. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, part of Northwell Health. He is also a Senior Attending Physician in the Department of Medicine, a member of the Medical Board, as well as a Past President of the Medical Staff Society (numbering over 3,000 doctors). As an educator, Dr. Edelstein is a Clinical Assistant Professor and member of the Executive Committee of the Department of Family Medicine at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, having had previous teaching appointments at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York University, UCLA, and McGill University.

Originally from Canada, Dr. Edelstein is an alumnus of McGill University, and was a Fellow of the Cardio Respiratory Laboratory at Montreal General Hospital. He first came to New York becoming Chief of Emergency Physicians at St. Francis Hospital, and later serving in this capacity in two other area hospitals. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Edelstein also earned an Executive Certificate in Healthcare Delivery Management from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business Management at NYU. Among numerous prestigious posts, he was appointed by Governor George Pataki and the New York State Legislature to the NYS Committee on Practice Guidelines and Medical Technology Assessment. He also served on the New York State Department of Health Managed Care Quality and Information Committee, and was a Deputy Medical Examiner for Nassau County. At North Shore, he has served on the Quality Assurance Committee, the Patient Safety Committee, the Medical Ethics Committee, the System-wide Geriatrics and Longevity Steering Committee, Chair of the Credentials Committee, President of the IPA, Secretary of the Medical Board, a member of the Physicians Health Committee, the Performance Improvement Group, as well as a multitude of other committees and advisory boards.

Dr. Edelstein is a Patron of Osler Library of McGill University, a member of the Osler Club of London, as well as a Lifetime Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, London. He has contributed to numerous books and articles in medical literature, particularly on the effects of arterial oxygen tension and nitrates on coronary circulation. Over the years Dr. Edelstein has been a consultant and advisor to numerous organizations in both the public and private domain including the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Mobile Health, Leviton Manufacturing, Norstan Apparel Shops, Long Island Savings Bank, as well as local groups such as the Village of Garden City and the Vigilant Hook and Ladder Company.

Dr. Edelstein has been named one of the Best Doctors in New York by New York Magazine and an Outstanding Physician in the U.S. by Town and Country Magazine. He was one of the Top 55 Family Physicians in the U.S. chosen by the Ladies' Home Journal, and has received other honors from Castle Connelly, Newsday, the Center for the Study of Services, and the Consumers Research Council of America. He was the 2015 Honoree of the national organization, Hugs Across America, and the 2017 Honoree of "The Art of Medicine" Annual Gala of the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. In his free time, Dr. Edelstein enjoys rollerblading on the streets of Great Neck and spending time with his wife Judy, their sons, and grandchildren. The Edelsteins enjoy travel, antiques, and classical theatre, and have been Patrons of Shakespeare's Globe theatre in London, as well as supporters of the Joyce Center in Dublin, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Classical Stage Company in New York.
