Max O. Stephenson Jr. Recognized for Contributions to Education

Dr. Stephenson holds expertise in nonprofit leadership and international development



With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Stephenson has worked with Virginia Tech since 1989.

    SALEM, VA, December 04, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Max O. Stephenson Jr., Ph.D., has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Stephenson has worked with Virginia Tech since 1989. He has held a variety of roles with the school, including as a professor of public and international affairs since 1989, the founding director of the Institute of Policy and Governance since 2006, and a professor at the Center for the Study of Rhetoric in Society since 2012. He has also been on the faculties for the MPH program, the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention, and the Institute for Creativity, Arts and Technology since 2012. Additionally, he has been a professor for the Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought (ASPECT) Doctoral Program at the college of architecture and urban studies and the college of liberal arts and human sciences since 2007. He has served as a visiting professor to the University of Latvia in 1995. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, he was a faculty member in the Department of Public Administration and an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Political Science at West Virginia University.

A graduate of the University of Virginia, Dr. Stephenson obtained a BA in Government and Economics with High Distinction in 1977. He went on to earn an MA in Public Administration in 1979 before getting a PhD in Government in 1985. He is a member of the International Advisory Committee of Cities of Peace and a member of the Kimoyo Ghana board of trustees. He also maintains involvement with the Virginia Tech chapter of the Society of International Scholars.

Throughout his career, Dr. Stephenson has been continually recognized for his work. He was most recently selected as the recipient of the Excellence in Scholarship Award by the College of Architecture and Urban Studies with Virginia Tech in 2017. In addition, he has received the Outstanding Faculty Award for Excellence from the Alliance for Social, Political Ethical and Cultural Thought doctoral program, as well as a University Relations Communications Excellence Award. Dr. Stephenson has also made contributions to publications pertaining to his areas of expertise. Most recently, he was credited as the co-editor of "RE: Reflections and Explorations: Essays on Public Policy and Governance" and "Arts and Community Change: Exploring Cultural Development Policies, Practices and Dilemmas."
