FARMINGDALE, NY, November 06, 2011
/24-7PressRelease/ -- As the month of October - National Domestic Violence Awareness Month - came to an end, MaxiAids recently had the opportunity to join The Doctors TV Show in supporting the recovery of a woman who has turned a horrific attack into an inspirational story.
Carmen Tarleton barely had time to react when the door of her Thetford, Vermont home was suddenly shattered in the middle of the night on June 10, 2007, and she found herself trying to block blows being delivered by her ex-husband with a baseball bat.
She did, however, manage to direct her two daughters to get a phone, lock themselves in a bathroom and call the police. As she drifted in and out of consciousness during the assault Carmen felt her skin burning, which she would later find out was due to the corrosive industrial chemical lye being squirted on her.
When she heard a police officer's voice, Carmen said she knew she would live. But doctors initially weren't so optimistic. With multiple bone fractures and severe burns over 80 percent of body, she wasn't given much chance of survival. She was placed in a medically induced coma where she would remain for three and a half months.
Carmen did survive, but she bears significant scars. She lost an ear and hearing on one side. Blind for 2 years following the attack, she had two cornea transplants, however post-surgery complications caused vision loss in one eye. Now legally blind, she can see colors and vague, blurred outlines, but no details.
Still, over the four years since the incident Carmen has made steady progress. No longer able to work, she has begun to accept public speaking engagements in which she tells her personal story, including her belief in the value of forgiveness. Pending the location of a suitable donor, she will likely have the chance to undergo progressive facial transplant surgery to partially restore facial features including her eyelids, nose and lips.
Carmen Tarleton told her story on a recent episode of The Doctors TV Show which aired on Thursday, 10/27/11. While putting the show - titled 'The Face of Courage' - together, producers contacted MaxiAids, who donated a gift basket of assistive products, along with a several hundred dollar shopping spree, which Carmen can use to shop for more products to support her progress towards greater independence.
"We were honored to be asked to participate... and happy to contribute" said MaxiAids president and founder Elliot Zaretsky. "Carmen is truly an amazing person and an inspiration to all of us."
On the show, host Dr. Travis Stork explained that Carmen "has a lot of expenses, but not many resources", so a fund was set up for her through the Dr. Phil Foundation. Anyone wishing to make a donation may go to thedoctorstv.com and click on Carmen's story.
