May 5th OutRaleigh Festival Theme "All Families Matter"

OutRaleigh is a festival that's meant to celebrate all families in the community.
RALEIGH, NC, February 26, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The LGBT Center of Raleigh announces today their second annual OutRaleigh festival will be Saturday, May 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh. The event is a free, family-friendly street festival celebrating the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, as well as their families, friends and supporters. Designed to be appropriate for people of all ages, the theme for 2012 is "All Families Matter."

"Our society is made up of many different family types: from a close-knit group of friends, to single parents, to divorced and remarried situations, to multiple generations of adults in a single household, and everything in between," says Daire Roebuck, an estate planning attorney and OutRaleigh steering committee member. "While OutRaleigh's first priority is to celebrate LGBT people and their families, its broader focus is to provide a safe and fun environment for all families to celebrate their own uniqueness while experiencing the value that other family types bring to the community."

Occurring three days before the public vote on a North Carolina constitutional amendment to define marriage, people from all backgrounds and beliefs are encouraged to come, meet and talk with same-gender loving couples to understand the struggles they face and how the amendment could affect them and their families.

Last year, the OutRaleigh festival had more than 6,000 attendees; it is expected to top 10,000 this year. "We're excited to build upon last-year's success of OutRaleigh," says James Miller, LGBT Center of Raleigh executive director. "There are still people that are uncomfortable, for a variety of reasons, with walking into the center. The street-festival format offers a less stressful way for individuals to connect with the LGBT community."

During the day, there will be live entertainment, guest speakers, information booths by supporting organizations, food from local restaurants, and a KidsZone with face painting, a bounce castle and other family-friendly activities.
