BOERNE, TX, December 16, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Meg Stone is a visual artist who lives and works in Austin, TX. She began her career as a sculptor, inspired by the voluptuous landscape of Black Mountain, NC. Her figures embodied the character of the mountains, reflecting a quiet transcendence and an immovable stature. Her affinity for landscape and its relationship to her work, led her to Scotland. The brooding, fleshy qualities of the mountains and moors transformed her pieces into guardians and giants. As her work became monumental in stature, she became fascinated with the organization and reorganization of anatomy. Meg was drawn to Italy to study the work of the old masters, and then on to New York to further pursue her anatomical studies. As her skills were honed, Meg began pushing the boundaries of the human form, expanding beyond the limits of her chosen technique. As a result, Meg embarked on a series of drawings, linear schematics intended to study the various ways she could approach her three dimensional work. Meg soon discovered the drawings to be a vehicle for subconscious imagery, possessing a life and potential of their own. Her drawings became cathedrals of light and darkness, housing layers of landscapes, figures and architecture; delicate webs spun by her subconscious mind. Meg continues to explore this way of working, consistently introducing new elements as the work progresses.

Meg uses charcoal on paper to create drawings that are elegant and engaging. They invite the viewer into a journey through ethereal settings that contain both abstract and representational imagery. Meg draws inspiration for the work from the land-form that so inspired her sculpture, and the human form that has been the driving force of her creative life. Figures materialize and dissolve as the viewer travels along rhythmic lines. The lines weave an animate tapestry of information that is both conscious and subconscious. Three dimensional abstract scenes are formed by layering foreground silhouettes and negative spaces against a backdrop of deep recesses and shadowy figures. Meg constructs the drawings in panels. United, the panels become a window into another world.

Meg's process in creating the drawings is similar to that of the Abstract Expressionists. She begins each piece in a trance-like state, creating a web of lines motivated by memory and emotion. This process infuses the initial composition with latent information. As the drawing develops, recognizable figures, landscapes, and structures emerge. Meg works her way through the drawing, fleshing out images as they arise. The result of this type of construction is that the images become layered one atop another, allowing the picture plane to appear as if in motion.

Meg is currently working on further development of the drawings, and making preparations to begin construction on a large scale sculpture project. The proposed sculpture will be figurative in content, and surrealist in execution. She will hearken back to her origins, and incorporate the methods utilized in her two dimensional work to augment the process. Meg will work on the drawings and the sculpture in concert, allowing these two powerful forms of expression to communicate and grow as separate entities.
