/24-7PressRelease/ - CARBONDALE, IL, February 08, 2006 - Combining elegant form with functionality Robert and Christian Meier have earned Artist of the Month honors from BoundlessGallery.com with their beautifully crafted furniture.
"Their work embodies contemporary furniture, they create original designs and their furniture is an accomplishment of form and finish." said BoundlessGallery.com president Peter Gregory on the choice of the Meier brothers as Artist of the Month.
While both were earning Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering they took classes in art and fine woodworking and wood finishing to balance their more technical classes and to give a creative outlet.
"I guess it runs in our blood," said Robert Meier. "Our grandfather and father were amazing craftsmen doing wood carving, our grandfather could carve almost you wanted out of a block of wood."
The German-born brothers visited California in the late 1980s and decided to move to the U.S. in the early 90s after a few more visits to friends in California.
"When we moved here we decided to try to make a living selling furniture. It has been a long hard road but it is working out." said Robert.
Their trademark piece, the tablecloth table, was born about twelve or thirteen years ago and began as a tribute to their grandfather. The table is made from two pieces of wood, the top is hand carved from a single piece of wood to look like a tablecloth and fits over the tabletop.
"The top reflects my mood, if I am calm there are fewer wrinkles," joked Robert.
When his first attempt at the table did not work out as well as he would have liked Robert sat it aside, but seeing the piece in their studio every day drove him to keep trying and led to their most recognized work.
"We have touched just about every continent with a tablecloth table," said Robert. "It has gotten us a lot of attention. It is really time consuming but I usually try to do a few each year to display in galleries or to show."
Their furniture has been featured in publications such as: Woodwork Magazine, American Woodworker Magazine, Workbench Magazine and California Home and Design Magazine.
They will be featured on the BoundlessGallery.com homepage for the remainder of February.
BoundlessGallery.com is wrapping up its first full year and netted 1,300 sales in 2005. A mark that company president Peter Gregory is confident the company can surpass in 2006.
