Melissa Rose Berta, EdD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    CUMMING, GA, November 13, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Melissa Rose Berta, EdD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Berta celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. A professor of mathematics, Dr. Berta has been teaching at Orange Coast College (OCC) in Costa Mesa, CA, for over a decade. The 164-acre campus, which ranks first out of Orange County's community colleges in a number of students it transfers to the University of California and California State University systems, was founded in 1947 and has since grown into one of the nation's largest and finest of community colleges in the nation. The mathematics department, in particular, is a leader in community college mathematics education, featuring a diverse curriculum, innovative classes, a highly respected honors program, and a high rate of university transfer and success.

Dr. Berta began her work in academia in 1992 as a Marec fellow at California State University, Northridge. During the fellowship, she spent a year with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, before going to work as a teaching assistant at the University of Nebraska, LIncoln. In 1996, she took on the role of executive director of Berta Engineering for two years while ultimately obtaining her higher education. Teaching for a few more years as an instructor of mathematics at Santiago College and Saddleback College, she later landed her first tenure track role at OCC. She has remained ever since earning her tenure a year early, as well as directing a Title III Grant for Student Success.

Attending the College of the Canyons, Dr. Berta obtained an Associate of Science in Mathematics and Science in 1989. She then returned to college to complete a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at California State University in 1993, followed by a Master of Science in Mathematics at the University of Nebraska in 1996, and an EdD in Educational Leadership at Argosy University in 2007. Prior to entering college, Dr. Berta spent three years with the United States Army Military Police Corps.

A longtime member of the National Association Teacher Education Preparation, the Mathematics Association of America, the American Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, and the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, Dr. Berta also contributed to the community as an eight-year veteran of the Girl Scouts of America as a leader. The recipient of a Larson Minority Graduate fellowship from 1994 to 1995, which was granted by the University of Nebraska, Dr. Berta has also been highlighted in over a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women since 2005. Married to Brad Berta since 1986, she has two children: Joseph Berta and Lisa Marie Berta.
