WASHINGTON, DC, July 07, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Nicaragua is an extraordinary example in Central America in terms of mitigation measures and reducing the effects of climate change," said Luis Alfonso de Alba Gongora, Permanent Representative of Mexico to the Office of the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Mexican Diplomat, appointed by President Felipe Calderon to discuss the subject of climate change from within the United Nations, participated in a Central American Parliament conference in Managua, Nicaragua, to highlight the risks of this phenomenon that threatens humanity.

At the conference, the Mexican specialist mentioned that Nicaragua is building its energy-friendly environment, and making efforts to use renewable energy and promoting reforestation, areas deemed critical to the development of a green economy.

Previous studies have estimated that Nicaragua has over 4,500 MW of potential to produce energy from renewable sources, of which 2,000 MW correspond to hydroelectric energy, 1,500 to geothermal, 800 to wind power and 200 to biomass.

"We must realize that this is a problem with social repercussions, which impacts on issues such as migration, the indigenous people's relationship with the authorities, with the development process of a country, political, economic and social impact beyond environmental ones," expressed the Mexican expert.

Alba Gongora said that even though Nicaragua is a victim of the effects of climate change, the country still constitutes as an example for other countries. "I believe that Central America is beginning to make an effort, and the case of Nicaragua is one of the notable examples, Costa Rica also has a tradition of care and concern for the environment and also has a number of green projects," he said.
