Drawing upon nearly 40 years of medical experience, Dr. Mahla serves as a professor with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He has been recognized as the executive vice chair of the department of anesthesiology since 2016, as well as the chief of anesthesiology and chief of the division of neuroanesthesia since 2015. Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Mahla considered working in the music industry as a classically trained pianist. However, he was ultimately drawn to health care due to his own experiences as a child growing up with asthma. Dr. Mahla received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, magna cum laude, from Davidson College in 1975, before attending the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, completing an MD in 1979. While completing formal medical training, he became fascinated with anesthesia and its many uses. Since then, Dr. Mahla has been licensed to practice in Florida and Pennsylvania. He is also certified through the National Board of Medical Examiners and is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Upon completing an internship and residency at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Dr. Mahla joined Uniformed Services University as an assistant professor of anesthesiology. He later transitioned into an assistant professor role with the department of anesthesiology and neurosurgery at the University of Florida Health. Ultimately rising to the rank of professor in 2001, Dr. Mahla continued to serve the university until 2015, when he joined Thomas Jefferson University.

An established voice in the medical community, Dr. Mahla serves as an ad hoc consultant for Anesthesiology, as well as Anesthesia and Analgesia. He has contributed numerous articles to journals pertaining to his areas of expertise, including the Journal of Neurosurgery and Journal of Clinical Anesthesia. Since the beginning of his career, Dr. Mahla has appeared as a lecturer at numerous medical institutions. He currently serves as a member of the Enterprise Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, Clinical Competence Committee, and Operating Room Committee with the Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals. In an effort to remain alert of recent developments in his fields of practice, Dr. Mahla maintains involvement with the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring, Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care, and American Society of Anesthesiologists.

In recognition of his commitment to medical education, Dr. Mahla was selected as the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award by the department of anesthesiology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College in 2016. Since the turn of the century, he has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Mahla continues to serve the Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals as an attending anesthesiologist.
