Drawing upon more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Wagner currently serves as a philosophy professor with the University of San Diego. In this position, he teaches a wide range of subjects, including ethical theory, ethics in education, ethics of diversity, philosophy of human nature, ancient philosophy, medieval philosophy, modern European philosophy, philosophy of love, and philosophy of religion. His specific research interests extend to classical Greek and Hellenistic philosophy, Roman philosophy, Plotinus, and Platonism and Neoplatonism.

A widely regarded voice in the field of philosophy, Dr. Wagner has authored numerous written works, including "The Enigmatic Reality of Time: Aristotle, Plotinus, and Today," published in 2008. He has served as an editor and book reviewer, in addition to contributing articles to professional journals pertaining to his areas of expertise. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Wagner has attended seminars exploring the philosophies of Plato, Neoplatonism, Augustine, Aquinas, and Kant. Most recently, he delivered a presentation entitled "Time Without Measure: Plotinus, Bergson, and Husserl" at the 11th International Whitehead Society Conference in 2017.

Prior to pursuing a career in education, Dr. Wagner received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Texas A&M University in 1974. He subsequently attended The Ohio State University, where he completed a Master of Arts in Philosophy in 1976, and PhD in Philosophy in 1979. His thesis, entitled "Concepts and Causes: The Structure of Plotinus' Universe," was completed under the direction of Robert G. Turnbull.

Upon completing formal education, Dr. Wagner briefly served as a lecturer with The Ohio State University and Capital University. He joined The University of San Diego as an assistant professor of philosophy in 1980, and eventually rose to the rank of associate professor of philosophy in 1984. Since 1989, Dr. Wagner has been recognized as a professor of philosophy. He previously served as the program director of the interdisciplinary humanities major, chair of the department of philosophy, and acting associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

A dedicated researcher, Dr. Wagner was recently named an International Opportunity Grantee by the University of San Diego in 2017. In addition, he is recognized as an Industry Expert and Distinguished Worldwide Humanitarian. Dr. Wagner maintains involvement with a wide range of professional circles, including the International Society for Neoplatonic Studies, where he has served as a member of the board of directors since 1998, treasurer since 2004, and United States section secretary-treasurer since 1982. He is also the former chair of the Constitutional Revisions Committee.
