The son of Michael Joseph and Barbara Stewart, Dr. Stewart was born on September 17, 1962 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. His career began with his education at Vanderbilt University, where he graduated with a BOE, summa cum laude. He continued his studies at Johns Hopkins University, receiving a MD in 1988. Dr. Stewart then attended Baylor College of Medicine, studying general surgery and otolaryngology. Following his education at the Baylor College of Medicine, in 1994, he became an assistant professor at this school. Later in 1999, he was promoted to the position of associate professor.

Between 1996 and 2005, Dr. Stewart worked as a director of residency education within the department of otolaryngology at the Baylor College of Medicine. In 1996, he graduated from the University of Texas with a MPH. At the Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Stewart became the assistant dean of clinical affairs in 1998 and, later, the general director of affiliate medical service in 1999. He returned to the positon of associate dean of clinical affairs between 2000 and 2005. Since 2005, Dr. Stewart has moved to Weill Cornell Medical College as a professor and chairman of the department of otolaryngology. Around the same time frame, he began work as the otolaryngologist-in-chief at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. While working as an educator, he was promoted to senior associate dean of clinical affairs in 2010 and vice dean in 2012.

As an esteemed otolaryngologist, Dr. Stewart is a member of various related organizations, including the Society of University Otolaryngologists, Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology, Triological Society, and American Rhinologic Society. Dr. Stewart has held several leadership positions within these respected groups. From 2008 to 2010, he was the chair of the research advisory board for the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. His service led him to be awarded with the Distinguished Service Award in 2004, Presidential Citation Award in 2010, and Distinguished Service Award in 2012.

Dr. Stewart has contributed to editorial circles, as well. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of The Laryngoscope Journal since 2011. He has worked as a reviewer for The Archives of Otolaryngology­Head and Neck since 1997, as well as The Journal of Trauma since 1998. From 2003 to 2010, he was an associate editor for The American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy.
Throughout his career, various organizations have acknowledged Dr. Stewart's contributions to his field. In 1992 and 1993, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Clinical Research award from the Kelsey­Seybold Foundation. In 2005, the Association of Perioperative Nurses bestowed Dr. Stewart with the Houston Distinguished Surgeon Award. In 2006 and later in 2013, he received the Resident Teaching Award from Columbia & Cornell.

Dr. Stewart has appeared in various Marquis Who's Who publications, including the 55th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America. He also has been featured in the 5th through 8th editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the 6th and 9th through 12th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. His achievements have been recorded in the 39th through 43rd editions of Who's Who in the East, as well as the 19th through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World.
