Michelle Obama and National Air Traffic Management Relied on Conference Calls During Olympics

Everyone from US First Lady Michelle Obama to National Air Traffic Control was using teleconferencing to stay connected during the Olympics.

WEST YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND, August 27, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Everyone from US First Lady Michelle Obama to National Air Traffic Control was using teleconferencing to stay connected during the Olympics.

As Team GB athletes focused on winning medals, many other people behind the scenes worked flat out to ensure that everything ran smoothly and all international state commitments and transport services continued to operate.

Michelle Obama made her first Olympics conference call on 24th July to conduct a press conference and advise US delegates and officials on plans for her four-day state visit to London during the Games. Her conference call included details on her plans for attendance at the Olympic Games opening ceremony, meeting Queen Elizabeth, greeting and cheering on the Team USA athletes, and sharing information about her 'Let's Move' initiative to combat childhood obesity in the US.

Behind the scenes, staff at all of the Air Traffic Management (ATM) partners across Europe have been working around the clock to keep our airports and airspace running safely and without delays for London 2012 visitors, athletes, officials, press and media, and spectators.

ATM partners have also been relying heavily on teleconferencing, making regular conference calls to share vital data about traffic, air flight plans and expected demand on services. On a normal summers day, there are 30,000 flights, with Europe's airspace running to near full capacity, so any slight delay anywhere in Europe would have a huge ripple effect. Europe has some of the most complex airspace in the world, so the additional demands placed on it by Olympics traffic were very challenging.

Teleconferencing is the quickest, most efficient and most cost effective way for them to manage air traffic plans and changes, and make arrangements for travel and logistics.

There was a scheduled National Air Traffic Control (NATS) conference call every single day during the Olympics Games, with plans in place for additional ad hoc teleconferences as and when required.

Monday 13th August was predicted to be the busiest day for airports and air traffic, but Air Traffic Management (ATM) had it under control, with the help of conference calls.

The Olympics will ran until 12th August. The Paralympics start on 29th August and run until 9th September.

Visitors are advised to check the official London 2012 website for information and advice about travel arrangements during the Paralympic Games.
