/24-7PressRelease/ -- The month of November is not only important for Election Day, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, but it is also National Adoption Month. Each year, Spectrum Child & Family Services, an affiliated company of Spectrum Human Services, Inc., joins with government agencies and child advocacy organizations from around the country to encourage individuals and families to consider adoption as a family option.
At first glance, the statistics are staggering: Over 500,000 children under the age of 18 are currently in the U.S. foster care system, with nearly 120,000 of them waiting to be placed in a permanent, loving home. According to the Michigan Department of Human Services, nearly 20,000 children are in foster care, and nearly 5,000 of those children are looking for a permanent, loving home. Research indicates children who are not adopted often lead troubled lives. They are less likely to graduate from high school, and face greater risk for homelessness, incarceration and poverty.
Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about becoming an adoptive parent. Most people believe they have to be "perfect" or just right. While it can be challenging to adopt a child from the foster care system, Spectrum Child & Family Services offers a variety of programs and services, free of charge, to assist individuals and families with the adoption process. Our Adoption Program will work with the adoptive family to address the psychological, physical, legal and financial impact of adoption. Parents may be eligible for a one-time tax credit of up to $10,000 to help offset adoption costs, and Medicaid will cover all medical and dental expenses.
Currently, Spectrum Child & Family Services has 90 children waiting to be adopted. These children are all ages and come from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. Some of the children have been victims of abuse, neglect and/or abandonment. However, they all need your love, structure and reassurance.
