Midlothian Girl Scout Troop 635 Hosts Electronic Waste Drive to Raise Awareness and Provide Safe and Secure Electronic Recycling through Richmond-based Industry Partner eWaste Tech Systems, LLC

Girl Scout Troop 635 will sponsor an electronic waste (e-waste) drive on May 30 in the Midlothian Middle School parking lot from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. The e-waste drive provides a safe and secure method for recycling computers and data destruction.

I am very proud of their initiative and commitment to raise awareness about the e-waste challenge and to provide Midlothian area residents a safe and secure way to dispose of electronic waste.

RICHMOND, VA, May 21, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Girl Scout Troop 635 of Midlothian, VA will sponsor an electronic waste drive in conjunction with Richmond-based electronic recycler, eWaste Tech Systems. The electronic waste drive will be held on May 30, 2015, in the Midlothian Middle School parking lot located at 13501 Midlothian Turnpike, Midlothian, VA from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. The community is encouraged to participate by dropping off their unwanted electronic waste.

Implementing this environmentally-conscious service project for the Midlothian community will help qualify the members of Girl Scout Troop 635 to earn their Silver Award, the highest award that can be earned by a Girl Scout Cadette. Pursuing the Girl Scout Silver Award enables the troop members to demonstrate leadership, organization, determination and dedication to community improvement. Cadette Deja Williams suggested the idea after viewing a program about electronic waste. After discussing the idea with Cadette Courtney Galligher and Cadette Morgan Cobbs the troop went into action. Troop leader Cheley Galligher acknowledges their effort, "I am very proud of their initiative and commitment to raise awareness about the e-waste challenge and to provide Midlothian area residents a safe and secure way to dispose of electronic waste."

During the drive, eWaste Tech Systems will collect consumer electronics, including computers, laptops, printers, cell phones, and computer accessories. Flat-screen televisions are also collected without a fee. However, CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TVs require a $10 collection fee for secure transportation to an authorized (CRT) disposal facility. eWaste Tech Systems also offers data destruction services ($5.00/hard drive) to quell consumer data security fears. Since its first collection, eWaste Tech has processed approximately 370,000 pounds of electronic waste in its R2:2013 (Responsible Recycling) Certified facility.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, reusing and recycling consumer electronics conserves natural resources and prevents pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling one million laptops saves enough energy to power over 3,500 homes per year.
