Football is for Lovers, a new book from Mill City Press by Bob Brooker and Kaye O'Dougherty, when it comes to your love life, football can be better than oysters.
With today's relentless television coverage, many a romance has failed to survive the rigors of football season. As Val, a Bergenfield, NJ bank teller, says, "I hate football! My boyfriend doesn't even let me
talk when he's watching a game. And from August to February, it seems like watching football is about all he does. And," she adds ruefully, "I do mean
all."
But authors Bob Brooker and Kaye O'Dougherty have set out to prove that it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, according to them, watching football together can actually improve your relationship and spice up your love life. As they explain in their new book,
Football is for Lovers, all it takes is looking at the game a little bit differently.
Since
Football is for Lovers contains references to Jerry Rice in a pink tutu, images of paintings by French artist Jean Dubuffet, an alert about the dangers of speaking Northeastern Mandarin, an explanation of the value of M&M's in a relationship, and a Burma Shave sign, to say it looks at football "a little bit differently" may be something of an understatement.
Still, as Betty, a Mount Laurel, NJ secretary, says, "I laughed my head off while I was reading
Football is for Lovers. But the next time I watched a game with my husband, I really understood what was going on." "I couldn't believe it when she recognized the Shotgun," grins husband Bob, "but when she called for a quarterback sneak, well, she sure impressed the heck out of me."
According to Celine Cichinsky, Greentown, PA psychologist and mother of three, learning the game of football is not all there is to
Football is for Lovers. "Of course, I have long been aware of the studies identifying a shared passion as one of the keys to an enduring relationship," she says. "But the thought that watching football together might actually
be that shared passion seemed . . . well, simply ridiculous. Until I read
Football is for Lovers. Besides," she adds with a chuckle, "who knew that dressing for the game could be this much fun?"
