CHARLESTON, SC, November 13, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Mills House Hotel, a historic Charleston, SC lodging, threw Charleston's first ever "Yappy Hour" at the end of this past month. This unique fundraising event brings together dogs, their owners and other concerned Charleston locals in order to collect cash and food donations for the Charleston Animal Society Pet Food Bank.

The Animal Society has recently reported that in light of economic worries, many middle-to-lower income families have begun to turn in their pets because they could no longer afford to feed them. Learning this, management and staff at the Mills House Charleston Hotel jumped at the opportunity to host this one-of-a-kind fundraiser.

Given the season, the Mills House and the Charleston Animal Society thought it only appropriate to adopt a "Howl-o-ween" theme, and sure enough many of the forty canine attendees arrived in full costume. Lucky dogs were treated to food and snacks while the human guests enjoyed hot hors d'oeuvres and live music from local blues rock band Robert Paige and the Holy City Sinners.

To further celebrate the season and assist with the fundraising, a pumpkin carving contest was held in the hotel courtyard along with other activities.

By the end of the night, over 100 guests had joined the excitement, raising $1800 in cash and 647 pounds of pet food. The Charleston Animal Society will employ these sizable donations in a program that gives qualified pet-owners a month's worth of pet food in order to help them keep their pets during tough economic times.

The "Yappy Hour" fundraiser comes only two months after a weeklong charity drive by the Mills House Hotel that raised over 500 pounds of food for the Low Country Food Bank. For more information about the Mills House Hotel, visit the web site at http://www.millshouse.com/
