Milton McC. Gatch, Ph.D., Honored for Excellence in English and Religious Education

Dr. Gatch continues to serve Union Theological Seminary as a professor emeritus



He is the author of "Till the Break of Day," a history of his family from the 1720s to the 1950s, published in 2015.

    NEW YORK, NY, April 22, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Milton McC. Gatch has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Gatch is a professor emeritus of Union Theological Seminary, where he taught church history from 1978 to 1998. He was also academic dean and provost at the school for 11 years, as well as director of the school's Burke Library. An ordained priest of the Episcopal Church since 1961, Dr. Gatch was a priest-in-charge at the Chapel of St. James Fisherman in Wellfleet, Mass. from 1976 until 2014. While these were the most prominent roles of his career, he also held other positions. These include chaplain of the Wooster School in Danbury, Conn., chaplain and chair of the humanities department at Shimer College, associate professor of English at Northern Illinois University, and department chair and professor of English at the University of Missouri. Dr. Gatch has also been a visiting fellow at Emmanuel College (Cambridge) and visiting Bonhoeffer professor at the Humboldt University (Berlin).

A major factor behind Dr. Gatch's success is his own strong academic foundation. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Haverford College, he studied at the University of Cincinnati College of Law and obtained a Bachelor of Divinity from Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Mass. He also holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University. His professional affiliations include the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Early English Text Society, and the Bibliographical Society of America. A past trustee of Yale Library Associates and the American Printing History Association, he is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a member of the Council of the Grolier Club.

Dr. Gatch has published books and articles on antiquarian and bibliographical studies, Anglo-Saxon studies, and medieval studies. His books include "Death: Meaning and Mortality in Christian Thought and Contemporary Culture," published in 1969, "Preaching and Theology in Anglo-Saxon England," published in 1977, "Eschatology and Christian Nurture: Themes in Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Religious Life," published in 2000, and "The Library of Leander van Ess and the Earliest American Collections of Reformation Pamphlets," published in 2007. "Till the Break of Day," a history of his family from the 1720s to the 1950s, was published in 2015.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Dr. Gatch spent 1974-75 at Clare Hall (Cambridge) as a Senior Fellow of the National Endowment of the Humanities. His accomplishments have been featured in the 46th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 4th edition of Who's Who in Religion, the 39th through 43rd editions of Who's Who in the East, and several editions of Who's Who in the World.
