DETROIT, MI, July 14, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With the trifecta of a lowered manufacturing cost, the rise of social media and the memory of last year's brutal winter fresh on the minds of the public, MMM Tech, LLC launches an Indiegogo campaign for MirrorMateMitts, weather-resistant side view mirror covers for cars and trucks.
MirrorMateMitts (MMMs) were created as a matter of necessity by Sid Holmes after he nearly cracked his car's side view mirror while scraping off caked-on ice and snow. The covers, made of water-repellent, ripstop nylon fabric, initially sold well across the country over the internet through an online store. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu1RBVuoMG0
A test run in a local grocer store chain proved promising but slim profit margins (postage is included in the MMM's $20 cost), combined with two straight winters with minimal snow (2011-13) sapped demand and sales. "Seeing piles of unsold bags of salt and snow shovels at supermarkets made me think twice before ordering more inventory," Holmes says.
Last year's record-breaking snowfall across the country resulted in an uptick in demand, but by then his U.S.-based supplier had doubled the cost of the covers, making a reorder impractical. Unable to find a domestic supplier at a doable price point, Holmes spent several months earlier this year sending samples back and forth to China-based companies he connected with through the business-to-business website http://www.Alibaba.com.
"The process was mind-blowingly quick," Holmes says of the two weeks it would take to secure sample covers from overseas manufacturers. "I'd send an email inquiry with a photo to a company on Monday. By Thursday my sample would be in their hands. And by the following Friday, the company's copy would be delivered to my door."
With a new supplier at hand, the next hurdle is meeting the manufacturer's MOQ, the minimal order quantity to be purchased and shipped, which is in the thousands. That's where funds raised through Indiegogo.com come in.
For their pledges Indiegogo contributors will receive MMMs at less than half the retail price; the higher the pledge, the greater the savings. "It's an opportunity to pre-order at a discount a product that anyone with a vehicle in a winter climate can use," Holmes says, noting that customers have begun purchasing MMMs during the spring and summer to keep birds from perching on and pecking at their mirrors; their droppings on the doors and mirrors damage the paint surface.
MMMs can also be customized with silk-screened company logos, slogans and phone numbers - a highly visible and unique advertising medium.
Holmes will spread the word about his Indiegogo campaign through Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, social media websites that have blossomed since he first started selling the covers years ago. "These communications tools have gained prominence and expanded membership over the past few years," he points out. "Combined with a lowered manufacturing cost and last year's terrible winter, there's no better time to expand the market for MMMs."
