/24-7PressRelease/ -- Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association, PC (MOGA) has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report. The ACR is a national organization serving over 32,000 radiologists, oncologists, and physicists with programs focusing on medical imaging and radiation oncology.
MOGA began offering screening mammography at its east Memphis office, located on the campus of Baptist Women's Hospital, in October of 2008. According to Ami Jennings, Director of Practice Operations for MOGA: "This was another opportunity for us to create a higher level of service and convenience for our patients. According to the latest statistics, around one in every eight American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This encompasses about 12% of the female population. We hope that by offering the screening mammography service within our own practice, we will encourage more women to have this performed."
The system used at MOGA incorporates digital Computer-Aided-Detection (CAD), which highlights characteristics commonly associated with breast cancer. When activated, it flags abnormalities to help the radiologist detect early breast cancer. CAD is, in essence, a second set of eyes to support and enhance the radiologist's judgment. Digital mammography is much faster than traditional film mammography, is analyzed on a monitor, and stores the images electronically. This allows the radiologist to better manipulate the image in order to see the breast more clearly.
The practice also began offering screening mammography services at its Wolfchase office in March of 2011, and services there are accredited as well.
